MemoMax is the system which records the memories, or liveware, of a citizen as he goes about his day-to-day routine. Approximately once every five minutecycles, a chip at the back of a clone's neck -- henceforth known as the MemoMax Chip -- scans the clone's brain and transmits any changes over a secure channel to an archive server. Should the clone be terminated, this liveware can be written to a new clone (assuming the citizen has any left), who can then pick up where his predecessor left of -- missing a couple of the most recent memories, such as the exact reason he was terminated...

It is important to note that this is not a two-way process: one cannot alter the archive and write the altered memories back to an active brain. To do this would be a MemoMax Liveware Overwrite, which is almost invariably fatal.
